The Best Engagement Photo Spots Around Johnson City and Elizabethton

I’m Chasey, the East Tennessee engagement photographer behind Raine Studios, and I’ve spent the last seven years hauling cameras, blankets, and third-wheel energy all over these mountains. The spot you choose sets the whole mood of your session. It’s the difference between “we climbed a mountain together” and “we got coffee and made out in an alley.” Both valid choices, by the way.

The good news: engagement photos in Johnson City and Elizabethton don’t lock you into one look. Within an hour, you can have balds with big skies, quiet riverbanks, brick downtowns, or your own living room. East Tennessee does range really well. Your job is to pick what feels like you. My job is to make it look good and keep you from tripping over roots in front of the camera.

The Best Spots for Engagement Photos Around Johnson City and Elizabethton

Roan Mountain: Carvers Gap and the Balds

Roan Mountain is for couples who want it wide open. Up at Carvers Gap and along the balds, you get rolling grass, soft light, and the kind of horizon that makes you forget your email exists. June is rhododendron season, which means pink blooms and also a lot of people, so we’ll plan around that if you want it quieter.

Best time of day here is golden hour, hands down. Sunrise is even better if you’re willing to get up early and avoid crowds. It’s breezy and can be cold even in summer, so layers are your friend. The “hike” from the parking area is more of a walk, but it’s still uneven ground. If we need permits or special permission for anything, I’ll check all of that ahead of time so you don’t have to Google trail rules at midnight.

Watauga Lake

Watauga Lake is for couples who like water, slower evenings, and maybe a beer on the tailgate afterward. We can shoot on the shore, on a dock, or tucked into the trees nearby. It has that calm, end-of-summer feel even if it’s April and still a little chilly. Think blankets, boots, and you two hanging out instead of posing like statues.

I like Watauga around sunset when the light hits the water and the hills start to glow. Weeknights are better if you want fewer people around, especially in summer when everyone suddenly remembers they own a boat. Heads-up: parking can be a little chaotic on busy weekends, and the ground near the water can be muddy. Wear shoes you don’t mind getting dirty, and I’ll keep an eye on any access rules or permits we might need for specific spots.

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area

Sycamore Shoals is a solid choice if you want nature without a long drive or a hike. There’s the river, open fields, trees, and some historic structures that add a little texture without turning it into a full-on costume drama. It works well for couples who want something simple, green, and easy to move around in.

Late afternoon into golden hour is best here, especially in spring and fall when the trees are doing something interesting. It’s generally pretty relaxed, but you might see walkers, kids, or the occasional event happening. If we need permission for certain areas or times, I’ll handle those conversations with the park so you don’t have to guess what’s allowed where.

Elizabethton Covered Bridge and Downtown Elizabethton

The Elizabethton Covered Bridge plus downtown gives you a nice mix: a little bit of river, a little bit of small-town streets, brick, and old signs. It’s great if you want Elizabethton engagement photos that feel local without being stuck in one tiny spot. We can start at the bridge, wander by the water, then head into town for storefronts, side streets, and maybe coffee if you need a break from smiling at me.

I like to shoot there on weekday evenings or earlier on weekend mornings, before everyone shows up with fishing poles and picnic blankets. During events, it can get busy and parking tight, so we’ll plan around that. The heads-up here is simple: there will be people. If you’re okay with a little background activity, it works beautifully. If not, we’ll steer you somewhere quieter.

Downtown Johnson City

Downtown Johnson City is for couples who want brick, neon, murals, and maybe a drink after. We can wander alleys, crosswalks, and side streets, then duck into a quieter corner when you need a second to breathe. It’s especially good if you live here or had your first date nearby and want your engagement photos in Johnson City to actually look like your life, not a random field you’ll never see again.

I love shooting downtown around sunset into blue hour, when lights come on and the sky still has color. Weeknights are usually calmer than Fridays and Saturdays, when everyone is out. Honest heads-up: you’ll get watched a little. People are curious when they see a couple being photographed. If you can laugh it off, we’ll get great stuff. If the idea stresses you out, we’ll pick somewhere quieter or start in a less busy part of town.

Buffalo Mountain Park

Buffalo Mountain Park is a good middle ground between “we hiked all day” and “we parked and stepped out.” You get woods, overlooks, and trails that feel like the mountains without committing to a full-on summit adventure. It’s great for couples who want a little bit of sweat, a lot of trees, and that feeling of being tucked into the hills around Johnson City.

Golden hour works well here, but because of the trees and hills, we’ll time it carefully so we’re not standing in full shade an hour too early. Some trails are steeper than others, so we’ll talk about how much hiking you actually want to do before I pick a route. Heads-up: trails can be muddy, and roots are everywhere. Wear real shoes, not something you saw on Instagram once and never tried walking in.

Your Place: Home, Favorite Bar, or Your Usual Spot

Your house, your favorite bar, your go-to coffee shop, the trail you walk every Sunday, the spot by the river where you always end up talking too long in the car. Those make great locations too. Engagement photos don’t have to be on top of a mountain to matter. Sometimes the best thing we can do is shoot where you actually spend your time and let you just be yourselves.

At-home sessions work well any time of year, especially winter when the mountains are brown and you’d rather be under a blanket. Bars and businesses might need permission, so if you have a place in mind, tell me and I’ll reach out or guide you on who to ask. Heads-up: your house does not have to be spotless. We’ll move what we need to, shoot in the good light, and ignore the laundry pile like adults.

How to Choose Your Engagement Session Location

Start with your vibe, not the location list. Do you want mountains and wind, water and quiet, streets and neon, or couch and coffee? Roan Mountain and Buffalo Mountain feel like big, wild, and a little messy. Watauga Lake is slower and softer. Downtown Johnson City and downtown Elizabethton are more urban and social. Home or your favorite spot is intimate and low-key. Pick the spot that looks like the two of you, not the one that looks like Pinterest.

Then think about how much hiking you actually want to do. If “hike” is a four-letter word, Sycamore Shoals, the Covered Bridge area, downtowns, or your house are going to feel better. If you’re happy to walk a bit but don’t want to show up sweaty, Buffalo Mountain and Watauga give us options without making it a workout. If you genuinely love trails and don’t mind wind, Roan Mountain is worth it. We’ll talk through this on our planning call so nobody is surprised by a hill.

Last piece: season. Spring is green and soft. Summer is lush and full, with longer evenings and more people out. Fall is color and crowds, especially in the mountains. Winter is quiet, moody, and perfect for at-home or downtown sessions with layers. There isn’t a wrong answer, just what fits you and how you want your Johnson City engagement photos to feel when you look back at them later.

Timing: Light, Weekdays, and Fall Color Crowds

Light matters more than almost anything else. Golden hour — the hour or so after sunrise and before sunset — is usually where we want to be. The light is softer, colors are richer, and you’re not squinting through harsh midday sun. In the mountains, we’ll cheat golden hour a bit because the sun dips behind ridges early. In downtown areas, we can play with shade, reflections, and streetlights as the sun goes down.

Weekdays beat weekends almost every time. Fewer people at Roan Mountain, fewer families at Watauga, fewer joggers at Sycamore Shoals, fewer onlookers downtown. If you can swing a weeknight, we’ll have more space and less waiting for backgrounds to clear. If weekends are your only option, that’s fine too. We’ll just plan for a bit more patience and maybe a slightly earlier or later start time.

Fall color is beautiful and also chaos in certain spots. Roan Mountain, Buffalo Mountain, and lake overlooks get busy when the leaves turn. If you want Roan Mountain engagement photos in peak color, we’ll book early, aim for sunrise or a weekday evening, and accept that we’re sharing the view. If you’d rather skip the crowds, we can chase color in quieter parks, neighborhoods, or along the river instead of the most obvious overlooks.

What to Wear for Your Session

Dress for the location and the weather, not for suffering. If we’re on Roan or at Buffalo Mountain, you’ll want layers, real shoes, and clothes you can move in. For downtown, think outfits you’d actually wear on a date. At home, keep it comfortable but intentional — jeans, tees, sweaters, bare feet on the couch. Shoes you can walk in are non-negotiable. You can always toss a nicer pair in a bag if we want a few shots with them and change once we’re in place.

I’ll help with outfits during planning, so you’re not guessing. You can text me photos of options, and I’ll tell you what works best with your location, season, and the way you want your photos to feel. The goal is that you look like yourselves, just a little more intentional and a lot more comfortable in front of the camera.

Working with Me for Your Engagement and Couples Photos

I’m based in Elizabethton and Johnson City, and I shoot couples and engagement sessions all over East Tennessee. Locally, couples and engagement sessions start at $400. If you want to go a little farther out, I travel for a small mileage fee. If you’re already booking me for your elopement or wedding, your engagement session is included at no extra cost. It’s a good way for us to get comfortable working together before the wedding day, and for you to see how I shoot without all the pressure of a timeline and a crowd.

When you reach out, we’ll talk about what you want your session to feel like, which of these spots fits you best, and how much walking you actually want to do. I’ll help you pick the location, season, and time of day that make sense for your life, not just for the internet. Then we’ll plan outfits, backup plans for weather, and any permissions or permits we might need for your chosen spot so you’re not dealing with logistics the day of.

If you’re ready to start planning, you can read more about how I handle couples and engagement sessions on my Couples & Engagement page and then fill out the inquiry form when you’re ready. Tell me where you’re leaning — Roan, Watauga, downtown, your couch — and we’ll build a session that feels like the two of you from the start.
